The Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Specialist is responsible for assisting project teams with the implementation of Technology, Building Information Models, Data Modeling and Virtual Design and Construction methodologies. The VDC Specialist needs to be knowledgeable about the latest approaches in AEC technologies and can drive the implementation of these technologies on large-scale engineering projects. The successful candidate must have solid knowledge of and experience with computer software, design & construction methods and practices, as well as Virtual Design and Construction concepts.


  • Help create presentation quality 3D models and graphic visualizations for proposals, preconstruction and construction.
  • Work on technology R&D initiatives as directed by the Design Systems Manager.
  • Provide advice and direction on projects whereby BIM technologies can be utilized.
  • Serve as liaison between corporate technology staff and project teams.
  • Organize and conduct technology education sessions and develop related materials.


  • Work directly with project teams as a coach and mentor while piloting new or improved design technology, at times acting as a team member as needed to achieve success.
  • Utilize a mix of travel and remote communication technologies to maintain high level and continuous support to project staff.
  • Develop education plans and materials as needed to support new technology adoption.
  • Develop continuing support communities for successful technologies that will become broadly utilized.
  • Work with IT staff to develop any systems, deployments, permissions etc. for rolling out new technology to project team members.


  • Assist the Design Systems Manager in showcasing new technologies to stakeholder groups throughout the organization.
  • Develop content for distribution on various mediums such as the Intranet, Content management System, internal social media, PowerPoint presentations etc.


  • Document project success metrics such as:
    • Productivity enhancements
    • Ease of user adoption
    • Potential client benefits
    • Staff involvement and assessment of aptitude


  • Seek out new or improved technology opportunities through various actives such as technology conferences, involvement with technology company futures programs, beta testing and online research


To be successful in this role, one must possess the following:


  • 5+ years of working extensively with design and graphics software on projects
  • Passionate about technology and its place in the future of the AEC industry
  • Demonstrated aptitude and interest in assessing and implementing new technologies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD/BIM software (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, Revit, SketchUp, InfraWorks, Navisworks, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience with Construction Technology Tools preferred (e.g. LiDAR, Virtual/Augmented Reality, Drones, 3D Printing, etc.)
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage existing resources as well as develop new training materials as part of new technology implementation.
  • Ability to work one on one and in larger groups to mentor staff working with new technology, often on tight project timelines.
  • A results-oriented individual passionate about how advancing technology provides value to the organization.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated background in design and graphics technology.
  • Demonstrated experience with new technology implementation.
  • Excellent presentation, speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Ideal candidate will know Javascript and/or other scripting languages.
