CHA Consulting, Inc. is currently seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Infrastructure – Bridge group in Buffalo, NY; Rochester, NY or Syracuse, NY.


Nearly one out of every ten bridges are structurally deficient. As the average age of our nation’s bridges nears 50 years, successful bridge projects must balance complex analytics, engineering innovation and context sensitivity with economic prudency and long-term feasibility. CHA’s bridge professionals incorporate collaborative and diverse thinking with practical and cost-effective designs that responsibly improve mobility and safety. We have inspected, designed, managed and overseen the construction of a wide array of grade separated crossings, retaining systems, and conveyance structures throughout the United States.


A Principal Engineer VI has an extensive engineering knowledge and may provide a leadership role for the work group through knowledge in their respective field of engineering. This individual is responsible for providing guidance and oversight to a design team working on numerous projects. A Principal Engineer VI manages all phases of a technical project from conception and design to completion, while providing engineering guidance to other departments and training new engineering staff.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; Master's degree is preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required


  • A minimum of 15 years progressive engineering experience is required
  • Expert knowledge in the bridge engineering field with proven ability to practically apply best industry practices
  • Comprehensive understanding of bridge engineering codes (AASHTO and/or AREMA)
  • Experience running NYSDOT, NYSTA, PennDOT and/or County-Owned Bridge Rehabilitation or Replacement projects in NYS.  Experience with railroad bridge rehabilitation is preferred.  Bridge inspection experience is preferred, but not required. 
  • Advanced proficiency with engineering, computational, and modeling software (eg; STAAD, Merlin, Revit, MathCad, MicroStation, AutoCAD or similar structural and drafting software)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to adapt communication style to suit various audiences
  • Understands QA/QC procedures, basic business practices, as well as laws and regulations related to the business of engineering
  • Leadership skills and proven ability to work with and guide technical staff working in a team environment  
  • An active role in a professional engineering society/organization preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Office software required
