Engineering - Structural (bridge design)

CHA Consulting, Inc. is currently seeking a Project Engineer to join our Infrastructure – Bridge group in Buffalo, NY; Rochester, NY or Syracuse, NY.

Nearly one out of every ten bridges is structurally deficient. As the average age of our nation’s bridges nears 50 years, successful bridge projects must balance complex analytics, engineering innovation and context sensitivity with economic prudency and long-term feasibility. CHA’s bridge professionals incorporate collaborative and diverse thinking with practical and cost-effective designs that responsibly improve mobility and safety. We have inspected, designed, managed and overseen the construction of a wide array of grade separated crossings, retaining systems, and conveyance structures throughout the United States.

At CHA, our Project Engineer provides advanced judgment and analysis techniques for the design development, implementation and technical analysis of new transportation systems, or changes to an existing facility to suit individual client needs. This key role is responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting and coordinating detailed phases of a project independently with other engineering disciplines and project management staff. The Project Engineer mentors junior staff members and provides technical review of their work as needed.

The Project Engineer recommends the appropriate design alternatives or solution to improve quality or cost-effectiveness of the transportation facility, and selects the proper design procedures, and is able to self-check his/her own work for completeness and accuracy in technical reports and calculations, prior to submitting to the lead engineer.  The Project Engineer identifies, develops, and gathers technical resources necessary to complete assignments. The Project Engineer continuously monitors the progress and performance of the engineering project against the project schedule and budget.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required; Master's degree is preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required

  • Experience with AASHTO bridge design specifications required
  • NYSDOT and/or NYSTA experience is preferred; County or City-owned bridge experience may be acceptable
  • Proficiency with engineering, computational, and modeling software (eg; STAAD, Merlin, Revit, MathCad, MicroStation, AutoCAD or similar structural and drafting software)
  • Familiar with QA/QC procedures and a basic understanding of engineering business practices
  • Leadership skills and effectively work in a collaborative team environment, while also having the ability to work independently
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office software required
  • An active role in a professional engineering society/organization preferred.
